Vash of Game-Hackers has dug up the secrets of the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 website. Including info, that could pertain to the game.

Here's the scoop...

First off is the pre-order button:

As Vash noted, this could possibly mean that there could be a Retail release or some completely different way to download the first episode.

Second, is the beginning of the what could be first few levels of Episode 1. No details, but it's worth speculating over.

Last of all, there are 4 unused buttons that are in the code for the Flash. Vash believes these could be the characters in the game: Sonic, Tails, Vector(?), and Knuckles. So, we may have a Sonic game that doesn't include ridiculous characters.

Plus, if we have Vector, we'll have Espio and the Bee-guy too.

I thought they said Sonic was the only playable character?

Vector? What are they smoking?

This is slowly becoming the 'too good to be true' status we were hoping it wasn't.

Tails and Knuckles seem logical, since this is a successor to Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
They released a recap of the story of Sonic 1-3, so it seems highly logical that at least Tails will be there too.
I suppose we get the old Sonic/Sonic+Tails/Tails/Knuckles combo, and maybe there really is a new green character.
After all, a new character has been released every Sonic the Hedgehog-game.

Yeah right.
Buttons which 75% are coincidentally are colored after the corresponding colors of the playable characters from the predecessors.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tails and Knuckles showed up, but trying to pry the secrets out of button colors is silly.
