The site has a few problems.
It is pretty much forums only. Nobody challenges anyone as far as I can see. I am not suggesting using the forums less, because the community on this site is good and you don't want to hurt that.

What needs to be done is encourage people to actually challenge eachother and want to do it, I'm sure most of you like myself joined the site originaly because we wanted people to play online with on our Nintendo games and found it hard to find decent people because of nintendos friend code rules and such.

Achiements or awards which were mentioned before is a bit of a double edged sword, I am sure there would be some people it would motivate to play more games, but I can't see it taking off long term (OCW game of the month anyone?). You also have the problem of only being able to give rewards for things people can't lie about. Like getting having a winning/losing streak (I'm fairly certain that is it actually). unless when both players are reporting who won there was also an option to report the score. then you could have awards for winning by a certain ammount.

Speaking of scores, I feel that the way the ladder decides who is ranked where is somewhat broken. It ranks on score, but I don't understand how that works, on some ladders someone might have 2 wins and 20 losses and be ahead of someone with 3 wins and 1 loss.I am not sure if the rank of the person you played has an effect on your score (I think it does) but this is also something that puts me off playing.

The ability to find someone who is online and actually wants to play games. I see people online on this site all the time but I am sure 99% of the time they are here for the forums, perhaps if there were a way to tell who is activly seeking someone to play online, it would be easier and faster than looking who is online seeing if any of them have the game, sending them a message or challenge only to have it declined because they aren't in the mood to play right now.

Even if it was something as basic as having a status you could change from "seeking", "online", "away" and being able to see who is actually seeking play.

New people are pushed away, they come here with hopes of finaly finding somewhere with leaderboards and people to play, and they leave realising nobody actually cares.

I think the chat is half-soaked. Chat is a great and fast way to talk to someone if you are mid-game, say pokemon, and you want to talk with the other person the chat would be great for that. Most people though seem to use the forums and thats it, the chat should be promoted more either that or a facebook style bar on the screen (im sure the code for it is easily found somewhere) where you can talk to other members (or friends) and see the above mentioned status' of them.

Sorry about the long post, im sure there are more things i could find wrong with the site its just I think i have wrote enough.

Agreed on achievements/awards, and the stuff you said before have been sort of repeated later on so I won't bother.

The only alternatives to that are:
- Ranking purely on win percentage, which gives problems in people playing once and hitting the top, and it means noobs are worth the same as experts rank wise.
- Not showing the score, but then people would wonder what exactly does decide ranking.

The score is affected by this formula:
Winner's gain = 1 + (LoserScore/WinnerScore)*5, maxing out at the amount the winner already has for a 2x gain.
Loser's loss = (LoserScore/WinnerScore)*5, or 25% of the loser's score if it exceeds that.

The only true fix is to have an FAQ and explain the formula in there, or have the formula listed on the leaderboard's page.

The changes I did recently are an attempt to help address that, but we still do severely need a Play Now. Either way, I posted that news article in an attempt for people to set their play frequency to make it easier to know who to bug, but everyone's a lazy bugger. Couldn't hurt to put Rarely and stop people from bothering you folks, maybe I'll have to run a script to set all unspecified to Rarelys.

Agreed. Why we need stricter modding and people to actually fill their play frequency.

Who would like a FB style chat here? This is just curiosity.

1 on 1 FB style chat could easily replace alerts if done nicely. I would like that.

Count me in.
1 to 1-instant messaging would be a major step towards improved communication.

Also, I suggest to put Skyping more into the foreground.
VoIPing during online-playing makes the NWC excellent.

I like the idea but curious as to how it would be implemented if it was, would you only be able to see friends or everyone online on the site (as far as I can tell, the currently level of activity on this site you could get away with showing everyone who is online) But I have no idea about scripts and coding, it might even be possible to have both (Online to friends, Online to everyone). The chat doesn't really get used the way it should anyway.

Not sure how many of you every used the Smash World Forums' friend finder before it went down, but that had something interesting in that you could add more people into the conversation (used for 2v2s). That would probs be even better.

You know what we need?
Some kind of instant-poke in case you add someone's friendcode, so he knows you've added him.

Whatever sort of chat we implement on-site, you best not get rid of irc chat. That's my home!

I like the ideas I'm seeing so far.

Or Ventrilo. Works better with multiple people.

Am I wrong in thinking that Skype is the one more used by our general persons? Just being the more widely-used software could be a big upper hand, but I'd look into both before making a full judgment. After all, I know little about them!

Skype is for casual talk while Ventrilo is more hardcore.
In Ventrilo you can make a channel where people can join all the time. In Skype you must start a conversation then invite people.
Either way, the voicechat is a good idea.

Vent requires a server. Skype doesn't. The majority of people using vent are WoW players and even them most are moving on to other software.

Yes, I know its freaking easy to get a Vent server. Doesn't change the fact Skype is used by more people and is easier to work around.

Also lol at calling Vent hardcore.
